What is IFTA in trucking?
IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) is an agreement among the lower 48 US states and Canadian provinces to simplify the reporting of fuel use by motor carriers operating across multiple jurisdictions.
When are IFTA quarterly fuel taxes due?
IFTA reports and payments are due quarterly: Q1 (Jan-Mar) is due April 30th; Q2 (Apr-Jun) is due July 31st; Q3 (Jul-Sep) is due October 31st; and Q4 (Oct-Dec) is due January 31st.
Do I need an IRP apportioned plate?
If you operate a commercial vehicle across state lines that weighs over 26,000 lbs (gross vehicle weight), has three or more axles, or is used in a combination exceeding 26,000 lbs, you are required to register under the International Registration Plan (IRP).
What happens if I miss an IFTA filing deadline?
If you fail to file your IFTA report or pay on time, you face a penalty of $50 or 10% of the net tax liability, whichever is greater. Continual failure to file can result in the revocation of your IFTA license.
