How to Get Your Motor Carrier Authority
Starting a trucking business requires Motor Carrier (MC) Authority from the FMCSA. Here's everything you need to know to get started.
Step 1: Get Your USDOT Number
Your USDOT number is your company's unique identifier with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Apply through the FMCSA portal.
Step 2: Apply for MC Authority
File the OP-1 form through the FMCSA's Unified Registration System. The filing fee is $300. Choose the type of authority that matches your operations:
- Motor Carrier of Property - For hauling freight
- Motor Carrier of Passengers - For passenger transportation
- Broker Authority - For arranging transport (no equipment)
Step 3: File Your BOC-3
Designate process agents in every state where you'll operate. This is required before your authority becomes active.
Step 4: Get Insurance
File proof of insurance with the FMCSA. Minimum requirements are $750,000 for general freight, $1,000,000 for hazmat.
Timeline
After all filings are complete, there's a 21-day waiting period before your authority becomes active.
