IRS Form 2290: Everything You Need to Know
IRS Form 2290 is used to report and pay the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT). If you own or operate a heavy vehicle on public highways, this tax applies to you.
Who Must File Form 2290?
You must file Form 2290 if your vehicle has a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more and is used on public highways. This includes trucks, truck tractors, and buses.
When is Form 2290 Due?
The tax period runs from July 1 to June 30 of the following year. Form 2290 is due by August 31 for vehicles used in July. If you first use a vehicle after July, the form is due by the last day of the month following first use.
What is Schedule 1?
Schedule 1 is your proof of payment. You need this stamped schedule to register your vehicle with the DMV or cross the Canadian/Mexican border. The IRS returns your Schedule 1 after processing your 2290.

- 4.5% penalty per month on unpaid tax (up to 22.5%)
- 0.5% interest per month on unpaid amounts
